re:Home made grill - 2006/07/11 00:05 There is something very interesting I've seen one day and thought to myself I must build it. Didn't try it, though it looked a superb idea.
I wonder what people think of it.

The thing was a tube, say 3 feet high, 1 feet in diameter.
On the top there was a fine metal grill where you put the meat on.
Something like 2-6 inches bellow there was another crude metal grill, on which you place the coals on.
A bit lower than that, there was a small window with a slide, which allowed you to adjust the amount of oxygen the coals get, and thus the inside temperature (the heat is rising and the air was sucked in from the window).
At the bottom there was something like a drawer to which the ash and too-small-coals fell and you could easily get rid of the ash.

On the top there was a cover you could close for BBQ, and there was also small device which you could set the height of the meat-grill on.

Sounds complicated but the thing is THE MACHINE for bbq and grilling.

re:Home made grill - 2006/07/11 06:46 mic that sounds like a real good plan for a grill and I'm sure the grill will work just fine.

The grill that I'm making has an offset 30" x 30" inch firebox with a 28" x 40" inch smoker welded on top of the firebox. This is all welded to an old 500 gallon propane tank ( the tank was purged, filled with water and hole cut in it ) the cooking area is 36" x 84" with a 36" x 48" pull out, stainless steel wire mesh grating.

I plan on cooking hogs, turkeys, pulled pork, briskets and ribs.

Sounds like you have space for quite a lot of ribs - any chance you FedEx me one

When I'm done with my project, which will probably take 4 years if I know myself, I'll upload a picture and let you know if it works good...

re:Home made grill - 2006/07/12 09:45 mic If I sent this gril Fed Ex would have to modify their truck lol

That grill you mentioned in the previous post sounds like the size of a 10 or 20 gallon water heater. It would be thick enough and it would even have a domed top.

I fired my smoker-cooker up the other day...just a test fire you do this to condition and " treat " the smoker like you would treat a cast iron fry pan.

I live in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountians and would like to try some wild game to cook on the grill.

Re:Home made grill - 2008/02/22 17:20 Hiya junkman, that's a great idea. I like it how nothing goes to waste and can be 'recycled' into something useful. Especially with BBQ's since that got my fancy all the time.

And, I also would like to say 'welcome' to the forum. I hope you will enjoy it, sir
