How to clean stainless steel
I have a stainless steel grill which I would like to clean thoroughly. That means also removing some burnt on "varnish". I'm afraid of scouring or leaving marks on the finish and would appreciate any advice as to how to avoid that.

My solution is a heavy duty oven cleaner. You need to make sure the stuff will stay in place though. I put large objects in to garbage bags, spray them, close the bag and leave for several hours. That takes care of the "varnish".

True, but it might also take care of the paint. I use gold scuff pads. You can get them at auto body supply stores and they don't scratch the stainless steel.

Someone told me about a product named "Bartender's Friend". I haven't tried it myself so can't say if it really is good.

Bartender's Grind won't scratch but neither will it remove baked on BBQ crud. I use a pressure washer on the outside and don't clean the inside but burn it off at high heat every so often.

The best de-greaser I have ever come across is "Greased Lightning". Should be able to get it in grocery or discount stores.

Get some SF-77 from a restaurant supply shop and spray it on your grill. All the grease and stuff melts right off. You can also scrub with it to make things go faster buy putting some of the stuff in hot water and using a sponge type scrubber.

Thanks for the suggestions. I actually do have Barkeeper's Friend so I think I'll try that first. I liked some of the other suggestions too so if it doesn't' work well I now have plenty of other options.
