Police Forensic and Eliminating software
So you want to barbecue your hard drives, do you? That`s probably the best way to prepare them. Fire up the grill and slather liberally with barbecue sauce. Turn frequently until crisp. Serve with a side of floppy disks, a big bag of RAM chips, and some DIP. Mmmm mmmm delectable!
There`s a buffet of evidence eliminator software out there. A lot of it I`ve seen is free. I can`t believe your inbox isn`t stuffed with it. Just do a search for evidence elimination, file shredding, track covering, etc. AskJeeves or Google... If you`re really paranoid, get a disk editor and mark it out manually. Just be aware that some data recovery outfits claim they can recover data that`s been overwritten ten times.
I like the barbecue idea best. Can I bring my "Pick A NIC" basket?

Re:Police Forensic and Eliminating software
There are many utilities that can still read an fdisked drive. What is wanted here is a WIPE utility. A quick Google search on "wipe utility" (sans quotes) will find a veritible plethora of such utilities, many freeware.

Re:Police Forensic and Eliminating software
bay-bee! Melted hard drive platters tell no secrets and tell no lies. I am unsure what rubbing sauce you would use to baste your platters prior to tossing them on the barby, perhaps muriatic acid? And oh, unlike brisket, no temperature probe is needed, simply get the fire roaring as hot as possible, as if you were cooking hamburgers and wishing to seal in the juices. Hard drive platter cooks much quicker than brisket too, though the taste is nothing to write home about.
Or if you are not feeling up to barbequeing ye olde hard drive, Mr. Spaminator recommends reading http://evidence-eliminator-sucks.com/ee-products.html for a list of some alternatives, both free and commercial, to the product that is advertised via paranoid fantasy rantings and spams by people who need to adjust their tin foil beanies (really, have you ever read any more incredible nonsense?). If you wish to learn more about the incredible psychotic ravings of the spammers in question, you may wish to go to http://evidence-eliminator-sucks.com . On the
little sense that they would buy something inedible spammed here? Well, except for a new grill or temperature probe, of course!

Re:Police Forensic and Eliminating software
You can not low-level format an IDE drive. What the utilities that CLAIM to LLF a drive actually do is write zeros to the user accessable sectors, as well as some other housekeeping functions. This puts the drive in very close to as-first-sold condition. These utilities are not offered as security measures, but rather as a repair.
The wipe utilities will over-write the sectors with characters, any number of (user selected) times. Five times will stymie any Federal office, and seven should satisify even the most paranoid. Five writes will block any attempts with current technology to read earlier writes.
