Pork butt vs. Pork shoulder?
Can someone please tell me if the pork butt is part of a pork shoulder? The place I go to buy meat only sells pork shoulders. Is it possible to make pulled pork from a pork shoulder? Maybe this is a bad idea but I just do not know. Any input would be great. Thanks.

re:Pork butt vs. Pork shoulder?
You are correct. The butt is part of the shoulder. I generally use the butt for pulled pork but I have used the shoulder as well and it works well. IF you just cut the shoulder in half you can cook it like you would the butt. Try a piece weighing about 4 or 5 pounds.

Here is a good link to check out that has some good info about the different cuts out there. http://members.shaw.ca/masterbutcher/meat_cutting_tutorial/shoulder.html

I am going to try as you suggested by cutting it into 4 pound chunks.

re:Pork butt vs. Pork shoulder?
You can cook the shoulder just like you would the butt. The taste is a little bit more like ham then butt. When you finish cooking it take off the skin and remove some of the fat.

I hate eating the skin. The fat does not bother me but the skin I always remove.

re:Pork butt vs. Pork shoulder?
I take it youre not a big pork rind eater? I love the stuff and eat it like candy.

re:Pork butt vs. Pork shoulder?
Pork rinds are just not my taste. Something about eating the skin of something just does not appeal to me.

I live out in California and we call the skin from a pig chicharrones. It is very popular out here dipped into some Tapito. California has a very strange mix of cultures and some interesting food.
